TIMIKA. The Mimika district administration said construction of the new terminal of the Timika Moses Kilangin airport and other facilities is expected to be completed in 2016.

Construction of the terminal and the facilities would start this year, head of the air communications division of the district communications service John Rettob said.

Construction of the three floor terminal is handled by the Communications Ministry with fund from the state budget, he said here on Monday.

The communications ministry will also expand the 200x100 square meter apron doubling it to 400x100 square meters, he said.

With the expansion, the airport could accommodate wide bodied aircraft in addition to small aircraft to serve interior flights as well as inter provincial flights.

John the VIP terminal built with fund from the district budget is already completed.

The district authorities will discuss the commercial operation of the VIP terminals and aprons with PT Freeport Indonesia and PT AVCO as the operator of the Moses Kilangin airport in Timika.

The airport will have two passenger terminals and aprons - the terminal and apron built and owned by PT Freeport Indonesia for its own use and the terminal and apron owned by the government to be operated commercially.

The facilities built and owned by Freeport and the ones built and owned by the government are located across the runway of the airport.

"The standard operation of the airport that involves the two sets of facilities needs to be arranged including in aircraft fuel filling, security aspect , handling, etc," John said.
