NATURAL DISASTER/ EARTHQUAKE - JAKARTA. A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Lebak, Banten on Tuesday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The quake hit Banten about 81 kilometres southwest of the provincial city of Lebak at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the BMKG.

The tremor was felt as far away as Jakarta, which is 153 kilometers away from Lebak. Office workers who just came back from their lunch break scrambled to find exits, trying to get out of tall buildings and found safe ground.

"I was so scared and tried to exit the building when the second tremor hit at around 1:20," Maria Anindita said after returning to her desk on Tuesday.

Reports of damage are yet to be confirmed in areas close to the epicenter.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide.

An earthquake struck the country's western Aceh province in December 2016, killing more than 100 people, injuring many more and leaving tens of thousands homeless.
