PADANG. SN Power has indicated interest in exploring the hydro power potential in the district of Pasaman, West Sumatra.

The Norway-based company plan to visit the district next month to see the possibility of investing in that area.

"We have sent data about the potentials and the possibility of building a hydro power plant at the Batang Masang river in Pasaman. It was not a a complete feasibility study but the data are quite complete that SN Power decided to visit that area," head of the capital investment office of West Sumatra Miswar Dedi said on Monday (30/1).

Miswar said that SN Power already expressed interest in building the hydro power plant earlier when a delegation of the company visited, and followed with electronic communications.

"They actually want feasibility study, but data which we have sent were enough to attract them to come here," he added.

He said the river could feed a 160 megawatt hydro power plant. On assumption a capacity of 1 MW is equivalent to Rp100 billion in cost , the project would cost trillions of rupiah.

"We also have sent data of investment requirement to the Pasaman district administration and the response is positive," he said.

The regent Yusuf Lubis even said he would help is settling if any problem in land clearing for the project.

"The forestry office also offer help to solve problem if the project would have to use forest land," he said.

Norway is known to have vast experience in building hydro power plants. More than 80 percent of power requirement in that country is supplied from hydro power plants, he said.
