TVOne's statement causes social distress: Megawati

JAKARTA. Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri said that television station TVOne's news coverage allegedly connecting PDI-P with the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) has caused social distress.

"The news on TVOne is extremely disappointing. It has distressed Indonesians who are currently fasting," she said in a press release received by kompas.com on Thursday.

The former president said that the news coverage had abandoned the ethics of journalism by directly attacking PDI-P's presidential candidate Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

Due to this, Megawati has urged the police to take action as the report had disturbed the peace.

Furthermore, she also asked religious leaders, public figures and teachers to fight for a democratic, peaceful and safe election.

"To the one-sided news coverage that accused Bapak Jokowi of being connected to communists, this is an inhumane accusation," she said.

Previously, as many as 40 supporters of the Jokowi volunteer team, Volunteers of Struggle for Democracy (Repdem), raided the TVOne office on Wednesday to show their objection to the news coverage.

TVOne general manager of public relations, Raldi Doy, said that the company had received all the complaints about the news coverage and promised to resolve the problem. (fss)
