Selecting stocks in the first semester of IPOs

JAKARTA. Indonesian investors may have several alternative stock portfolios, as seven companies are planning to conduct initial public offerings in the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in the first semester of this year.

"Those seven companies are waiting for approval from OJK (Financial Service Authority or FSA) about the effective time,” said the Director of IDX Samsul Hidayat, Friday (24/2).

The IDX expects that 35 new issuers will list on the stock exchange in this year. Samsul is expected that IDX can meet the target.

Information are circulating that subsidiaries of some state owned enterprises (SOEs) are preparing for go public process. However, none of the companies have confirmed the date for the IPOs.

Some companies, which have prepared for the IPOs in the first semester, consist of some sectors. One of the companies is PT Pelayaran Tamarin Samudera, which is a vessel rental company. This company will offer about 20% of its shares to public. To date, the company’s equity has amounted to Rp 251 billion. In the future, this company will allocate the funds resulted from the IPOs for the working capital.

According to the Senior Analyst at Binaartha Parama Sekuritas Reza Priyambada, the IPOs in the first semester of 2017 will involve some potential sectors, such as consumer good and property sectors.

“The consumer sector will be prospective (in the IPO), while the property sector is also potentially to grow. We expect that the property business may be growing in a positive manner in this year,” he said, Monday (27/2).

In general, Reza estimates that the IPO in the first semester would have positive prospects. In this case, the positive market trend may support the companies in the IPOs.

The companies may want to conduct IPOs in the second semester. However, the companies may need extra efforts to boost the share prices in the second semester, on the grounds that the market may tend to cool down with the sideways trend.
