JAKARTA. The Japan-based Soka University awarded President Susilo Yudhoyono the academic title of Doctor Honoris Causa for his contributions to culture and education on Tuesday.
Soka University rector Yoshihisa Baba said the granting of the degree was based on a recommendation from the university’s founder, Daisaku Ikeda, to honor Yudhoyono’s achievements and contributions to culture and education.
Yoshihisa said Yudhoyono’s achievements were evidenced by the many academic titles he had received at both the national and international level.
“His Honor, Mr. President has also been known as a leader who always realizes the plans he has conveyed. He has always lent a helping hand and devoted himself entirely to his country’s security and economic development, and has contributing significantly to other political policies,” said Yoshihisa in a bestowal ceremony at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.
In his speech, Yoshihisa thanked Yudhoyono for the latter’s support to the Japanese people during crisis. He said Japan would always remember the humanitarian assistance and support provided by the Indonesian government and people when the country was hit by a massive tsunami in 2011.
“We are really thankful for your support,” said Yoshihisa.
Yudhoyono expressed his gratitude for the award, saying that the Indonesian government was striving to provide adequate access to education to all Indonesian people.
“There is a reason why education has become our main priority. I think education is the most effective way to fight poverty. Higher education can give people a lot more opportunities throughout their lives,” said Yudhoyono.
Soka University’s award to Yudhoyono is the tenth Doctor Honoris Causa degree the President has received during his tenure. Japan-based Ritsumeikan University awarded a similar degree to Yudhoyono on Saturday. (alz/ebf)
