CAR SALES - JAKARTA. PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM) and PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) have issued an official statement regarding recent news. Toyota Indonesia has temporarily suspended the delivery of several Toyota models in Indonesia, particularly for products developed in collaboration with Daihatsu.

This suspension is a follow-up to the discovery of several procedures that did not meet standards by Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd announced on April 28, 2023. An independent committee was formed to thoroughly inspect various procedures within the company, which includes a total of 64 vehicle models currently being developed as Daihatsu brands or to be marketed as Toyota brands.

“We want to confirm that currently, customers using Toyota products, including those developed with Daihatsu, do not need to worry or take any action, and can continue to use their vehicles as usual. This is based on the fact that all Toyota vehicles (including those developed with Daihatsu) sold in Indonesia have met the applicable homologation rules and processes,” wrote Toyota Indonesia in its official statement, on Friday (22/12).

Currently, as part of the temporary delivery suspension, Toyota Indonesia has coordinated with the Indonesian Government to explain the facts related to this case.

After consulting on the next steps, it was decided that the vehicle delivery process, including models developed with Daihatsu by Toyota Indonesia, has returned to normal starting on December 22, 2023, to meet the needs of customers in Indonesia.

The Indonesian Government also hopes that the affected exports can be resumed as soon as possible after confirmation from the relevant authorities in the export destination country.

“Once again, Toyota Indonesia sincerely apologizes to all customers and stakeholders in Indonesia for the inconvenience and possible concerns caused by this activity,” wrote Toyota Indonesia.

This case is a continuation of the scandal of deviation of side crash safety test procedures on models issued by Daihatsu Motor Corporation, which is more than what was announced in April and May.

Initially, only three models were affected, namely, the Toyota Yaris Ativ or Vios made in Thailand and Malaysia, then the Perodua Axia made in Malaysia, and the latest Toyota Agya made in Indonesia, even though the assembly schedule had just started in June 2023.

Based on an investigation involving independent third parties, 174 new case items were found in 25 testing categories, which involved modifications to the door trim layer and side crash testing issues.

As a result, there were discrepancies in 64 models and 3 engine types, including products that are no longer produced. These models include products under the Daihatsu, Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru brands.
