Tito passes House Commission III screening

JAKARTA. National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) chief Comr. Gen. Tito Karnavian has passed the confirmation hearing conducted by the House of Representatives Commission III overseeing legal affairs on Thursday, making him one step away from becoming Indonesia's new top cop.

Twenty eight commission members representing ten party factions grilled Tito for two hours on what programs he would implement should he take the National Police chief post before all finally endorsed his nomination, which was earlier submitted by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

"Commission III has agreed to respectfully dismiss National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti and agreed to appoint Comr. Gen. Tito Karnavian as the new National Police chief," Commission chairman Bambang Soesatyo of the Golkar Party said concluding the meeting.

The commission will take the result of the test to the House's Plenary Meeting on Monday for final endorsement. Several lawmakers have said they would push for the new National Police chief to be nominated before the Idul Fitri holiday.

Should Tito win the endorsement of the House, he will replace Gen. Badrodin Haiti, who is set to retire in July. Tito, the youngest three-star general in the Police force was the sole National Police chief candidate submitted by Jokowi. (Erika Anindita Dewi)
