JAKARTA. State-owned telecommunications provider PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) will open two new overseas branches this year, in Taiwan and Macau.

Adding to the new branches, Telkom public relations vice president Arif Prabowo said that the company would proceed with a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement, which would allow Telkom to forge cooperations with fellow network operators in the two countries.

The Jakarta-listed company will cooperate with Far EasTone Telecommunications and with Taiwan Mobile in Taiwan, as well as with Companhia de Telecomunicacoes de Macau in Macau. The company will also operate its retail businesses in the two countries, due to the market potential.

According to Arif, the investment for the plan would be “relatively low”, as quoted by kontan.co.id.

Overall, Telkom is aiming to expand its business to ten new countries, although Arif explained that the plan was still being discussed and that the company had not yet decided which countries to traverse.

Telkom currently has branches in seven other countries, including Hong Kong, East Timor, Australia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States, having wholesale enterprise branches in the latter two countries. Overseas contribution toward Telkom’s overall earnings is still at 3 to 4 percent.
