KENDAL. Kendal Regent Widya Kandi Susanti stated on Thursday that sex workers were heroes since most of them worked to support their families, rejecting any plans to close brothels in her regency.
“In the current condition, it would be inhumane to close brothels since it would increase poverty and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases,” Widya who is also chairperson of the regency’s chapter of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), said as quoted by kompas.com.
She said closing the brothels would be very easy as it only needs approval from the regency council that would subsequently deploy Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) officers. “But the impact of the closures would be difficult to deal with.”
