OIL AND GAS - JAKARTA. The Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) has reported a 2.2% increase in gas production in 2023 compared to the previous year.

According to data as of March 2024, the gas lifting (gas flow) amounted to 5,367.7 BBTUD (billion British thermal units per day). Of this total, 4,109.6 BBTUD, or 77%, was allocated for the domestic market, with a surplus of 1,258.1 BBTUD, or approximately 23%, being exported.

Hudi D. Suryodipuro, Head of the Program and Communication Division at SKK Migas, stated that future gas production is expected to continue to rise, supported by the onstream projects of Tangguh Train 3 and Jambaran Tiung Biru (JTB).

"Furthermore, there are major gas projects that will be onstream, such as Geng North in East Kalimantan, Abadi Masela in Maluku, Asap Kido Merah (AKM) in West Papua, and other projects," Hudi said in an official statement on Wednesday (8/5).

In addition to this, the discovery of giant new gas reserves in areas like Andaman has led SKK Migas to project that Indonesia's natural gas production will continue to increase in the future, in line with the long-term plan (LTP).

Hudi added that gas production exceeds domestic needs, necessitating a reliable gas network infrastructure and adequate market, as gas supplies will continue to increase in the future.

According to Hudi, the involvement of all stakeholders, including midstream and downstream industry players, is essential. These steps are expected to maintain national energy resilience and support sustainable economic growth.

“The bottom line is that SKK Migas is committed to ensuring the supply of gas from upstream for national needs is secure,” he emphasized.

With a strong commitment from the government and all involved stakeholders, it is hoped that Indonesia can optimally utilize its gas resource potential to support energy resilience and national economic growth.
