Police will be required to join tax amnesty

JAKARTA. Not only civil servants at level III or above, government will also target law enforcer and soldier to join tax amnesty in the second period. During the socialization of Tax Amnesty Program at Jakarta Regional Police office on Tuesday (18/10), Director of Law Enforcement at Directorate General of Taxation Dadang Suwarna said, “The whole range of Jakarta Regional Police must join tax amnesty”.

According to Dadang, the Jakarta Regional Police has large number of potential taxpayers to participate in tax amnesty.

Without mentioning the number, Dadang said that all police officers at sub-district, district, and provincial level will be encouraged to join tax amnesty. Tax authority even will conduct consultation session on tax amnesty for police officers.

Head of Jakarta Regional Police Inspector General M. Iriawan claimed to give instruction to all ranks of police under the scope of Jakarta Regional Police office to join tax amnesty.

Iriawan hopes that this becomes the contribution of Jakarta Regional Police to the government program.

However, he has not yet been able to estimate the number of potential police officers to participate in tax amnesty. As an information, the number of Indonesian National Police personnel as of the end of 2015 was 429,711. This is not a small number.

In the future, Jakarta Regional Police promises to support tax authority in socializing tax amnesty program to mayors, heads of sub districts, and to the lower levels.

Executive Director of Central Indonesia Tax Analysis (CITA) Yustinus Prastowo expects that the tax amnesty program will be a momentum to create clean state apparatus, including in the police offices. However, this effort should be accompanied with the improvement in monitoring system and law enforcement.

Without the improvement in monitoring and law enforcement, the practices of extortion and gratification will happen continuously.

According to Yustinus, by participating in tax amnesty, a state apparatus has implicitly admitted to have additional incomes aside of salary. The additional incomes sources may be from legal business, or even from extortion and gratification.
