PHRI demands stimulus to boost MICE tourism

ILUSTRASI. Direktur Keuangan Mandala Finance Christel Lasmana memberikan penjelasan setelah RUPST, Rabu (19/4).

JAKARTA. The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) wants the government to provide stimulus for every hotel and restaurant business player in the country in order to help boost the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) tourism industry.

PHRI chairperson Wiryanti Sukamdani said such a policy was crucial for the sustainability of the industry as the government had barred its officials from holding meetings in hotels.

“The occupancy rate of every hotel in the country decreased by between 5 and 20 percent during the November and December 2014 period due to this policy,” Wiryanti said on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

“We want to and are ready to help the government develop the tourism sector even though our occupancy rates decline, thus we need stimulus.”

She also hoped the government would not forget that the tourism industry was the fourth-largest contributor to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) throughout last year, showing that it holds an important position in developing the economy.

“We need strong political will from the government and coordination between the government and private sector to optimize our tourism sector,” she continued.
