JAKARTA. The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry on Tuesday inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with state-owned energy firm PT Pertamina to ensure that fuel distribution would reach fishermen living on the outermost islands and in remote areas.
“Our fishermen said they did not need fuel subsidies, they needed fuel to be available to them,” said Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti during the signing ceremony of the agreement.
Susi stressed that fishermen often bought non-subsidized fuel although they were part of the intended target of the government program because of the scarcity of subsidized fuel in their areas.
“[The availability of] diesel fuel is essential for our fishermen. If fuel distribution does not run smoothly, if will seriously affect their fishing activities,” said Susi.
Meanwhile, Pertamina president director Elia Massa Manik said that Pertamina and the ministry would follow up the agreement by establishing a joint-team to study the fuel demands of fishermen in remote regions.
Pertamina marketing director Muchamad Iskandar added that his company would cooperate with local agents in remote regions to help the firm distribute the fuel to fishermen.
