JAKARTA. After years of declining interest from Japanese tourists, more and more people from the country have been returning to the island for their vacations this year.

The stoppage of Japan Airlines (JAL)’s direct flights to Bali, the scarcity of Garuda Indonesia’s direct flights between Bali and cities in Japan, the global economic downturn and the tsunami in 2011 jointly contributed to the fall in the number of Japanese holidaymakers in Bali over the last three years.

Official data from the Bali Statistics Agency showed a rosy picture revealing a 26.8 percent increase in the number of Japanese tourist arrivals in October, reaching 17,845 persons, as compared to 14,064 persons in the same period last year. Between Jan-Oct 2012, the number of Japanese tourists visiting Bali reached 155,519 persons. (The Jakarta Post)
