Jakarta sets venues for Asian Games’ sailing event

ASIAN GAMES - After a long period of study and consideration, the Jakarta administration has finally come up with locations for the sailing and jet ski events at the upcoming 2018 Asian Games. The events will be held on city-owned land in West Ancol and off the northern coast of Indah beach in Ancol, North Jakarta.

Jakarta Spatial Planning Agency head Gamal Sinurat said the administration had previously proposed Marina beach, located within the Ancol Dreamland Park, to be the venue for the two sports. However, the park’s operator, PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol, rejected the idea, saying it could “hamper our development plans.”

As a result, the administration decided to use vacant land in West Ancol as the venue for sailing, which needs about 1.2 hectares of space.

The jet ski event, which needs a similar amount of land, cannot be built on the same city-owned land, as the remaining 1.4 hectares will be used by Thousand Islands regency to build its representative office.

“Therefore, the venue for the jet ski event will be built offshore near the northern part of the Mercure Hotel on Indah Beach,” Gamal told The Jakarta Post on Monday evening.

The construction of these two venues will require Rp 185 billion (US$13.8 million).
