Indosat Ooredoo focuses on digital services

JAKARTA. Publicly listed telecommunication company PT Indosat revealed its new identity as Indosat Ooredoo on Thursday, saying it would focus on becoming the frontrunner in digital telecommunication in Indonesia.

Company president director and CEO Alexander Rusli said on Thursday that digital services would be the DNA of Indosat Ooredoo.

"Indosat Ooredoo aims to be number one in digital income, number one in digital experience and the number one digital brand for customers," he said in a media statement.

The company said that in order to achieve that, Indosat Ooredoo would offer services that were easier to access, simpler and more affordable.

The provider also launched its 4G LTE service with network data speed of 112 mbps.

Indosat Ooredoo doubled its outlets across the country. Customers can also purchase phone credit through Indosat Ooredoo's website.

The company recorded 69 million customers by the end of the third quarter of this year. Data usage also grew 155 percent in the third quarter of this year from the same period last year, with 19 million active Facebook users every month.

Alexander said the change was in response to public demand for reliable digital connectivity.

"The digital world must be user friendly, simple and easily accessed. We will help all Indonesians to increase their quality of life through digital services and technology," he said.

The announcement of the rebranding was made on Thursday with the introduction of a new logo. Qatar-based telecommunication giant Ooredoo has a majority 65 percent stake in Indosat, with the remaining owned by the government (14.29) and the investing public (20.71).

Ooredoo Group chairman Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud al Thani said in the statement that he felt excited over the launch of the new brand. The company has said it is committed to using mobile technology to increase the quality of people's lives in the countries in which it operates.

Besides Indonesia, Ooredoo operates in several Middle East and Southeast Asian countries, including Myanmar.

Sheikh Abdullah said the Indonesian government apparently had a strong vision to develop digital services and give access to all people for a digital economy.

"We support the government's commitment and will work hard to give the advantage of the digital world for all," he said.

Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara welcomed the change as he expected the company would make a significant contribution to Indonesia's digital industry.

He said separately that Indonesia aimed to be the biggest digital economy in the region with US$130 billion worth of e-commerce by 2020.
