From REGIONAL ELECTION - JAKARTA, The All-Indonesia Student Executive Body (BEM SI) is planning a large-scale demonstration in response to the revision of the Regional Election Law by the Working Committee (Panja) of the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI).
"BEM SI will stage a massive protest in front of the DPR RI," said Herianto, the Central Coordinator of BEM SI, in an interview with Kompas.com on Wednesday (21/8/2024).
Heri stated that the action will be taken as soon as possible. Tonight, BEM SI is conducting simultaneous consolidation across Indonesia.

Shortly after the DPR announced the meeting results, BEM SI and several Indonesian citizens began posting blue-background photos with the Garuda logo and the words "Emergency Warning". The hashtag #kawalputusanMK was also included.
As previously reported, the threshold for nominating the governor of Jakarta is set to drop drastically after the Constitutional Court decided to change the nomination threshold for regional heads through Decision Number 60/PUU-XXII/2024.
The petition was submitted by the Labor Party and Gelora. "Granting the petitioner's request in part," said Constitutional Court Chief Suhartoyo in the verdict reading session held on Tuesday (20/8/2024).
This decision brings new hope in the nomination of the governor of Jakarta, which previously sparked controversy due to "bulk ticket" purchases by the Indonesia Forward Coalition (KIM).

With this change, more political parties can nominate gubernatorial candidates with fewer votes, opening opportunities for new figures in the Jakarta Regional Election contest.
However, a day after the decision, the DPR and the government immediately held a meeting to discuss the revision of the Regional Election Law. Deputy Chairman of the DPR's Legislative Body (Baleg), Achmad Baidowi, claimed that the revision of the Regional Election Law was carried out to accommodate the Constitutional Court's decision allowing non-parliamentary parties to nominate regional heads.
Awiek, as he is affectionately known, stated that the Regional Election Law was revised to ensure that the Constitutional Court's decision is included in the law.
"Of course, the main point in the Constitutional Court's decision is to accommodate non-parliamentary parties to be able to nominate," said Awiek at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday.
