Indonesia to Inject $1.1 Billion Into Health Insurer BPJS Kesehatan

BPJS KESEHATAN - JAKARTA. Indonesia's government will inject 20 trillion rupiah ($1.11 billion) into health insurer BPJS Kesehatan to help the state agency cover its deficit in 2026, according to a government statement.

BPJS Kesehatan has 285 million policyholders, making it one of the biggest single-payer health insurance providers in the world, but the agency often runs into financial problems.

 

So far this year it has collected 118 trillion rupiah in revenues, below the 132 trillion rupiah it has paid out in medical claims, its chief executive Priharti Pujowaskito was quoted as saying, according to the statement released by the president's office on Monday.

The government cash injection will take place in October and November and it will use existing funds from the 2026 state budget, Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara said in the statement.
