JAKARTA. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will make an official statement regarding the Indonesians whose names are included in the Panama Papers soon.
"We are just about to discuss it. After all the data is complete, only then will I speak," said Jokowi on the sidelines of his working visit to Kepulauan Seribu regency on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.
"I will speak later. I don’t want to give half statements now," he continued.
Head of Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) Muhammad Yusuf said the publication of the documents, which has revealed 2,961 names of Indonesians, is likely correct in indicating tax avoidance of those listed.
Yusuf said everyone has been obligated to report their transactions to the PPATK since 2014, including companies that make international transfers.
As many as 2,961 names of Indonesians were listed in the "Offshore Leaks" publicized by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) in 2013.
The document listed the ownership of offshore companies under the jurisdiction of foreign countries, including the British Virgin Islands, Cook Islands and Singapore.
The more recent Panama Papers, was sourced from the leaked information of a Panama-based company, Mossack Fonseca, which list a number of Indonesians.
