Former spy chief Hendropriyono files tax amnesty

JAKARTA. Retired army general and former State Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief AM Hendropriyono requested tax amnesty in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Claiming he was a “good taxpayer”, he said his participation in the program was mainly to improve his personal and his firms’ tax administration. “I dutifully pay property and other taxes every year,” he told journalists.

Hendropriyono expressed his relief after filing his documents and called for other fellow businesspeople to follow suit. “Now I can run my business without worries,” he said.

He refused to disclose the value of his assets he reported to tax authorities. He only declared his wealth but said he had no plan to repatriate his overseas assets. “My overseas assets are only a bank account for my children studying abroad and to pay the medical bills of my wife being treated abroad for leukemia,” he said.

Hendropriyono started his career as a businessman after retiring as the spy chief in 2004. He is owner of Hendropriyono Corporation Indonesia, a holding company consisting of property developer Nusa Konstruksi Enjiniring, oil and gas company Andalusia Bumi Energi and automotive firm Adiperkasa Citra Lestari (ACL).

Last year, Adiperkasa Citra Lestari started a partnership with Malaysian automaker Proton Holdings Berhard in a car manufacturing project.
