JAKARTA. The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, says she deplores the announced executions of six death-row inmates in Indonesia.

"The announced executions of the six death-row inmates, including a Dutch citizen, for drug offences is deeply regrettable. This would be the second round of executions since November 2013," Frederica said in a statement issued in Brussels on Thursday.

"The EU is opposed to capital punishment in all cases and without exception and has consistently called for its universal abolition.

"The death penalty is a cruel and inhumane punishment, which fails to act as a deterrent and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity," the statement said.

"The European Union calls on the Indonesian authorities to stop all pending executions and consider establishing a moratorium on the use of the death penalty as a first step towards definitive abolition."
