JAKARTA. A Jakarta commuter line train derailed on its way from Manggarai station in South Jakarta to Duri Station in West Jakarta causing a disruption to train services and subsequent passenger build up on Wednesday.
The train derailed near Sudirman Station in Central Jakarta at around 3:30 p.m. The derailment also blocked the operation of the commuter-line train between Bogor in West Java, and Tanah Abang and Jatinegara Stations in Jakarta.
“The incident caused other commuter trains, such as those serving Bogor to Jakarta Kota Station in West Jakarta and Bekasi to Jakarta Kota Station, to end their trip at Manggarai station,” Eva Chairunisa, the spokeswoman of commuter line operator PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ) said on Wednesday.
KCJ was forced to halt the train services from Jakarta Kota station to Bogor and Bekasi following the derailment.
Eva said that KCJ was focusing on getting things back to normal, adding that KCJ had urged passengers to return their tickets and use other transportation if they did not want to wait.
No details have been released regarding the cause of the incident, however the company has promised that an internal team would carry out an investigation.
The incident resulted in the accumulation of hundreds of passengers at Manggarai Station on Wednesday evening, kompas.com reported.
The passengers, who came from stations such as Kota and Tanah Abang, had enlisted other forms of transportation to get to Manggarai Station, in hopes of continuing their journey with the commuter line service. Passengers had to wait in queues of 50 meters or more before entering the station's gate.(Marguerite Afra Sapiie)
