AP II installs more CCTV to tighten security

JAKARTA. State-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II (AP II) has improved security at baggage-handling locations by installing more closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, following the alleged theft case involving budget airline Lion Air’s baggage handlers and security staff.

According to AP II president director Budi Karya Sumadi, the company aimed to increase CCTV coverage by 30 percent in the airport to minimize the potential risk of similar incidents occurring again in the future.

"AP II has made efforts to tighten security to eliminate potential losses or damage to passengers’ luggage by increasing CCTV by 30 percent to broaden coverage 24 hours. We are also working closely with the police on this," said Budi in a press statement received by thejakartapost.com on Wednesday.

Earlier, Soekarto-Hatta International Airport Police arrested two Lion Air security officials and two baggage handlers after uncovering alleged misconduct from CCTV footage recorded on Nov. 16.

Further investigation indicated that they may have worked together to steal passengers' belongings.

Further, Budi explained that AP II would continue to improve airport security to ensure passengers’ comfort. Luggage-service improvements, he said, would still be the main focus of AP II.

"For example, by applying an automated baggage [handling] system at all airports under the authority of AP II, and improving coordination with airlines and ground handling to improve services at the airport," Budi added.

Complaints

Lost and damaged or mishandled baggage are two of top 10 problems complained about by airline passengers, according to a survey conducted by AP II in collaboration with the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) in May to June 2015.

The survey also identified illegal taxis, parking, trolley facilities, smoking in the airport, restrooms, waiting room seating, unresponsive airport employees and ticket touts as the most complained about issues.

AP II followed up the survey by eliminating illegal taxis, adding more trolleys, erecting no-smoking signs in airports and removing nearly 100 tenants in the waiting areas in all terminals to increase the amount of seating.

"AP II will also instruct baggage handlers to maintain service standards and remove ticket counters to eliminate ticket touts, add regular parking areas and improve service standards in each facility, including toilets," he said. (Ayomi Amindoni)
