JAKARTA. State-run airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I (AP I) is set to allot Rp 3 trillion (US$23.26 million) of investment this year to expand the country’s main tourist gateway, Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali.

“Bali is not only a gateway for domestic tourists but also international travelers, thus we need to increase the capacity of our terminals in order to accommodate more passengers in the airport,” AP I’s Ngurah Rai International Airport general manager Herry AY Sikado said in Kuta on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said that the Rp 3 trillion would be used to expand the airport’s apron, domestic terminal and international terminal, as well as to develop toll-road access connecting the airport with Denpasar and its surrounding cities by collaborating with state-run infrastructure firm PT Jasa Marga, the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and state-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (Pelindo III).

“We also have a plan to develop a general aviation terminal that is built exclusively for chartered flight services,” he said.

Co-general manager I Gusti Ngurah Ardita said that the firm would double the size of both the domestic and international terminals.

Currently, Ngurah Rai’s international terminal is 129,000 square meters while the domestic terminal is 68,000 square meters.
