JAKARTA. Graft defendant former Constitutional Court chief justice Akil Mochtar said he was convinced that the Jakarta Corruption Court would not sentence him to death should he be found guilty of multiple graft charges.

“I am convinced that I will not be given the death sentence,” Akil told reporters after testifying in the graft trial session of suspended Banten governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah.

Akil also said it likely he would be sentenced to life imprisonment.

“There are people who stole trillions of rupiahs from the state and they did not get life in prison. I did not steal money from the state, I just took it from other people,” Akil said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors accused Akil of amassing Rp 57 billion (US$4.8 million) from rigging 10 elections and laundering a total of Rp 180 billion, Rp 160 billion while he was with the court and Rp 20 billion during his time as a lawmaker at the House of Representatives.
