Ahok postpones Luar Batang eviction

JAKARTA.  The Jakarta Administration will postpone the eviction of illegal settlements in the Luar Batang area of North Jakarta, initially planned for May, because of a lack of available low-cost apartments to accommodate the evictees.

The city planned to clean out the area in May following the first stage of evictions at Pasar Ikan in the beginning of April. However, subsidized apartments, commonly known as rusunawa, have not yet been prepared to accommodate the relocated people, Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said on Tuesday.

Ika Lestari Aji, head of the Jakarta Housing and Public Buildings Agency, said that 400 apartments at Rawa Bebek in the Penjaringan subdistrict of North Jakarta would only be ready in September.

Therefore, the city will postpone the eviction process until the apartments are all ready. The city administration will also compensate evicted residents who own official certificates for their land.

Separately, the deputy governor for spatial planning and the environment, Oswar Muadzin Mungkasa, said the administration would turn Luar Batang village into a tourist center in the capital.

The evictions are part of the city's re-invigoration of Maritime-based tourism connecting Luar Batang and Pasar Ikan to the Sunda Kelapa Port and the Maritime Museum.

The legendary Luar Batang mosque, which has attracted pilgrims from many parts of the nation, will be connected to the city's Old Town area, known for its colonial-style buildings. The city administration will also build an open green space in the area. (Callistasia Anggun Wijaya)
