Police shoot former GAM member dead

BANDA ACEH. A joint team from the Aceh Police and the police’s Mobile Brigade (Brimob) unit shot two men, killing one, in Blang Malu, Mutiara Timur district, Pidie regency, Aceh regency early on Sunday. 

Police said the men, identified as 29-year-old Nasir alias Puthet and M. Rijal, who was killed, were former Free Aceh Movement (GAM) members who were carrying arms and were believed to be part of the Din Minimi gang, often moving from one place to another in Pidie.

Based on information gathered by tribunnews.com, during the raid Rijal and Nasir were sitting at a street stall on Jl. Nasional Banda Aceh-Medan, 18 kilometers from Sigli, the Pidie regency capital.

Police sources said Rijal was killed by a bullet to the spine as he tried to flee through a rice field, while Nasir suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg. 

Rijal was a resident of Gampong Rheng, Keumala district, Pidie, while Nasir is from Gampong Ulee Blang, Pirak Timu district, East Aceh.
