Online passport requests set to start on May 16

JAKARTA. Jakarta residents will soon be able to get a queue number for applying or renewing their passports online under a new service, which will take effect starting on May 16.

Passport applicants can download the “Passport Queue” application via their smart phones. The online application service is still on a trial basis and for the time being, it will be valid only at the Class I South Jakarta Immigration Office.

Immigration Directorate General secretary Friment FS Aruan said the service was provided because all this time, people had to stand in long lines at immigration offices either to renew their passports or to apply for new documents.

“This passport application is online-based. Hence, applicants can access the queue system via their smart phones. For the time being, only Android phones can access the system,” said Friment as quoted by kompas.com. He was speaking during a press conference at the South Jakarta Immigration Office on Wednesday.

With the systemized program, he said, applicants would have a well-arranged schedule on what day or what time they should come to immigration offices to submit their passport application documents so there would not be a long queue.

“The allotted time and number of applicants served per hour will be arranged by the system. We will limit it so that every hour, passport services will be provided for only 50 people,” said Friment.

The immigration office is also set to implement another innovation, called Whatsapp Gateaway Service (WAGS). Through the chatting application, passport applicants and officials at immigration offices can communicate, Friment said.

If both programs run successfully in South Jakarta, they will be implemented in all immigration offices.
