Boosting profits from turbine lubricants

JAKARTA. Lubricant producers benefit from the projects of 35,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity due to demands on lubricants for the turbine of each of power plant.

Lubricant producers, such as PT Pertamina Lubricants is preparing to increase its production volume by 3% of its current production volume.

Director of Marketing and Sales at PT Pertamina Lubricants Andria Nusa said that Pertamina will increase its production volume from 450,000 kiloliters per year to 463,500 kiloliters per year.

"The projects of 35,000 MW electricities will be completed gradually by 2019 so that we will increase the productions in a gradual manner," Andria said.

Pertamina claimed to allocate 60% of its products to industry sector, including mining, oil and gas, fertilizer, cement, paper, chemicals, and other industries.

According to Andria, the demand for industrial lubricants tends to decrease. However the demand is expected to increase due to the economic recovery. Furthermore, the power plant projects have created additional market for the lubricants.

Pertamina claimed to have secured license from turbine producers such as GE, Siemens, and Mitsubishi. Therefore the power plants, which use the brands of turbines, may consume Pertamina's lubricants.

Aside of Pertamina, PT Shell also enjoys the market of industrial lubricants. Director of Lubricants Affairs at PT Shell Indonesia Dian Andyasuri said that the sales of industrial lubricants contributed to 14% of the total sales of Shell.

The market opportunity has led Shell to invest US$168 million to establish a lubricants factory in Marunda, North Jakarta with 120,000 ton of production capacities per year.

"Our consumers include electricity, mining, paper, pulp, plantation, and transportation sectors," Dian said.

Unlike Pertamina and Shell, PT Topindo Atlas Asia, which is the holder of lubricant brand of Top1, prefers to focus on automotive segment. "Automotive segment comprises 99% of our markets, while the market of electricity segment does not exceed 1%," said President Director of PT Topindo Atlas Asia Paul Toar.
