Automatic toll gate threats thousands of workers

JAKARTA. Ministry of State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) targets to apply electronic payment system to all the gates of toll roads, which are managed by PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk by the end of 2016. The ministry has given instruction to Jasa Marga to meet the target.

According to Minister of SOE Rini Soemarno, the cash less payment will reduce crime rate, as well as simplify the payment process at the toll road gates. In the future, Rini expects that other toll roads’ managements will follow Jasa Marga in terms of implementing e-toll payment.

This plan has dragged toll road’s employees to uncertain condition, on the grounds that they may lose their jobs. Recently, Indonesian Toll Road Employees Association (APJATSI) and  Indonesian Workers Unions Association (ASPEK) have submitted an objection over the policy.

According to Chairman of ASPEK Mirah Sumirat, currently there are 20,000 employees work for toll road. The policy is expected to affect to work termination for toll road’s employees. Mirah added that policy will only benefit banks, which are the e-toll providers, while the employees and their families will lose their livelihood.

Secretary General of ASPEK Sabda Pranawa Jati added that aside of the employees, the toll road users will suffer from this policy, on the grounds that the full implementation of e-toll provides no alternative for the users.

Until the news was revealed, Jasa Marga has not yet commented in responding to this matter. “We have not been able to give comment”, said  Head of Public Relations of PT Jasa Marga Dwimawan Heru.

However, Dwimawan said that Jasa Marga will just be able to apply the e-toll payment system to 50% of 1,022 toll roads managed by the company by the end of 2016. Previously, Dwimawan said that Jasa Marga has set the target to fully replace the toll road payment system in 2018, in accordance with the work plan of Ministry of Public Works and Housing.
