Lazada investigates online shopping deceit

JAKARTA. E-commerce giant Lazada has stated that it is still investigating an alleged case of online shopping fraud following widespread reports that one of its Jakarta-based consumers received a bar of soap instead of an iPhone he had ordered from the store.

“The investigation is still underway, and we have discovered further findings,” Lazada Indonesia public relations manager Tania Amalia told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

She refused to reveal the findings, however, saying that Lazada would rather communicate them directly to the consumer, who had been in regular contact with the company via email.

“We want to inform our consumer first. As of now, there is no information we can share with the public,” Tania said.

She further said Lazada Indonesia would not disclose any initial findings to avoid further speculation among the public. However, the company would immediately make public the results of its investigation after it was completed.

News reports on the alleged online shopping scam emerged after a man identified as Danis Darusman posted a complaint on his Twitter account about experiencing shoddy service from Lazada.

Danis posted a tweet on Sunday, saying that he had opened a package from Lazada and found a bar of soap instead of the new Apple iPhone 6 Plus he had ordered from the store.

“I bought an iPhone 6 Plus at @LazadaID last week but this is what I eventually got. What should I do?” he said on his Twitter account @danisdarusman, while posting a photo of the package.

“Order an iPhone 6 Plus and you will get a bar of soap. Only at @LazadaID,” Danis said in another tweet.

He also vented on his Path account on the same day, posting a video showing he was opening the soap bar to support his claims.

Danis’ complaints went viral on social media and drew mixed reactions, with hundreds of Twitter users retweeting his grievances. (alm/ebf)
