JAKARTA. Jakarta City Council officially filed a recommendation to the Home Ministry on Wednesday to install acting Jakarta governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat to the official position.
The recommendation was announced during a plenary meeting on the resignation of the city's non-active governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, currently in prison for blasphemy.
"Based on a letter to the Home Ministry, we would like to recommend [the ministry] appoint Djarot Saiful Hidayat as Jakarta governor for the remaining working period of the 2012 to 2017 term," said the council secretary, Muhammad Yuliadi during the meeting as quoted by kompas.com.
The meeting also confirmed the election of Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno as Jakarta’s new governor and deputy governor as stipulated by the Jakarta Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) in a letter received by city council.
Yuliadi said the councilors also requested Djarot's current official position as deputy governor be dropped.
The recommendation letter will be sent to the Home Ministry before ministry officials forward it to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
Once the President accepts it, Djarot will be the city's governor until October.
