JAKARTA. President Joko Widodo regretted that the demonstrations have ended with a riot, whereas until Friday (4/11) the demonstrations were running smoothly.
"We have seen that political actors were taking advantage the situation", said President Joko Widodo in a press conference on Saturday (5/11) predawn as broadcasted by Kompas TV.
President stressed that the government has accommodated the demonstrators' demand by appointing Vice President Jusuf Kalla to meet the demonstrators. Vice President Jusuf Kalla was accompanied by Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Human Rights Affairs, Minister of Religious Affairs, Chief of Armed Forces, and Chief of National Police.
"During the meeting, it was clear that the legal process over Basuki will be conducted in firm, rapid, and transparent manners", President said. President also asked the demonstrators to go home in an order manner and leave the case to the law enforcement agencies.
Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung rejected the assumption that President Joko Widodo was reluctant to meet with the demonstrators on Friday (4/11) afternoon. Pramono added that President had actually three times mentioned to return back to the palace. However, the plan was cancelled due to the traffic problem.
