MARITIME - JAKARTA. Fourteen crew members of the fire-damaged KM Riki Baru fishing vessel were rescued after holding onto water gallons and other materials for hours.
The boat caught fire on Monday night in Thousand Islands waters on the eastern side of Paniki Island.
The National Police’s chief of water patrol sub unit head, Sr. Comr. Makhruzi Rahman, said the survivors were found some 21 miles from the fire.
“They were in the water, swimming. We started looking for them at 12 a.m. and managed to find them at 7 a.m.,” Makhruzi said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.
Police KP Pelatuk vessel commander First Insp. Erwin Saputra said the survivors, while wearing life jackets, were holding onto water gallons and other materials to stay afloat. Soon after they were rescued, rushed to the shore and taken to a nearby hospital for medical check-ups.
“We provided first aid. We asked them to change their clothes and gave them water to drink,” Erwin said.
The Search and Rescue Team found three dead bodies on boat. They are still searching for one crew member who is still missing.
