Jakarta to stop people rebuilding on cleared land

JAKARTA. Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama says he will stop people rebuilding homes on cleared land in Kampung Akuarium, Penjaringan, North Jakarta.

"I've told the mayor to stop people building this week. We will keep clearing the area," Ahok said at City Hall on Tuesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

People started to erect semi-permanent buildings after Ahok lost the April 19 gubernatorial election to Anies Baswedan.

City secretary Saefullah said he had rebuked public order officers for not stopping the building.

"The mayor said there were more than 300 residents in that area even though we relocated 340 residents to the Marunda, Rawa Bebek and Cipinang low-cost apartments. The area should've been cleared," Saefullah said.

He said the administration would check the identification cards of the squatters to see whether they were really Jakarta residents.

If they were really Jakartans, the administration would provide low-cost apartments in Rawa Bebek, Marunda and on Jl. Raya Bekasi KM 2, the construction of which will be finished later this year, he said.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Public Order Agency head Jupan Royter said officers would be ready to stop building activities.

However, they were waiting for the mayor to collect data on the squatters, he said.
