Govt preps cash bonuses for Olympic medalists

JAKARTA. The youth and sports minister has promised to immediately arrange cash bonuses to be given to Rio Olympic medalists, with badminton mixed doubles gold medalists Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir set to receive the highest amount of  Rp 5 billion (US$381,388) each.

“We will immediately process [the cash bonuses]. Hopefully, the process will be completed in the next three weeks, as we need to follow certain administrative procedures,” said assistant to the youth and sports minister for sports achievement upgrades,  Gatot S. Dewa Broto, as quoted by Antara news agency on Thursday.

Gatot ensured the cash bonuses were ready.

In the final showdown late on Wednesday evening, the All England champions Tontowi/Liliyana put the icing on the nationwide celebration of the 71st anniversary of Indonesian independence by outclassing Malaysian duo Chan Peng Soo/Goh Lie Ying in an easy 21-14, 21-12 win to claim the gold medal.

Olympic medalists will enjoy cash bonuses from their respective sporting associations. Other medalists are weightlifters Eko Yuli Irawan and Sri Wahyuni, who clinched silvers and are therefore entitled to a cash bonus of Rp2 billion each.
