Saudi Arabia extends aid for Aceh by end of year

JAKARTA. Saudi Arabia will increase its relief funds to a total Rp 806.6 billion (US$70 million) to assist victims of earthquake and tsunami in Aceh until December 2014, the Saudi Arabian vice interior minister says.

"We hope the assistance could relieve the suffering of the tsunami victims,” Saudi Arabia Vice Interior Minister Abdul Rahman Ali Al-Rubaiaan said as quoted by Antara news agency on Tuesday.

Al-Rubaiaan was speaking during a visit to Indonesia to assert humanitarian aid from a Saudi charity. He expressed his appreciation to Indonesian government for helping the team distribute the assistance.

"The success of reflects a close relationship between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia,” Al-Rubaiaan said.

The humanitarian aid was provided among other things in the form of the construction of 1,500 houses, water well drilling and water refineries, Prince Naif Hospital establishment and two clinics in coastal villages in Aceh.

Saudi Arabia has also provided funds to renovate Baitul Rahman Mosque, the construction of a number of facilities in Banda Aceh city as well as establish two orphanages and provide prayer rugs and Koran for local mosques.

Meanwhile, Aceh Governor Abdullah Zaini expressed his high appreciation related to Saudi Arabia for tsunami victims as well as infrastructure development in the province.

"This program is a social service, which is expected to provide assistance to the Acehenese people from Saudi Arabia,” Zaini said.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has also provided humanitarian aid to earthquake victims in Yogyakarta and flood victims in Jakarta respectively as much as Rp 3.4 billion and Rp 5.7 billion. (put)
