North Kalimantan to build nine railway tracks

NUNUKAN. The North Kalimantan provincial administration will build nine railway tracks to connect several remote regions.

Railways will improve connectivity in industrial areas in the province, Andi Nasuha, head of the railway and air transportation office, said here, recently.

"Trains are needed to improve transportation services and connectivity among airports, seaports, and industrial areas," he noted in a statement.

The administration has conducted a design and feasibility study for the plan to build a railway system having nine tracks, in addition to the national train network to be built by the central government.

The central government has planned to build a 75-kilometer-long railway track connecting Tanjung Selor and Mangkupadi in Bulungan District in 2020.

Based on the Industrial Ministry's decision, the track will be built inside a special economic zone.

Moreover, the government has planned to build the Tanjung Selor-Tanjung-Redeb track in Berau District in East Kalimantan Province and Tanjung Selor-Long Bia.

In accordance with the feasibility study, a detailed engineering design will be prepared this year by using the regional budget, and its environmental impact assessment will be conducted in 2018.
