Major banks park money in securities

JAKARTA. Major banks still prefer to adopt conservative attitude. In this case, the banks are still piling money in a safer place in the form of securities.
The slow demand on credit and the tightening liquidity become the main reasons for the bankers to park their funds in the form of securities.

Based on KONTAN’s record, as per October 2016, the amount of funds placed in 10 major banks in the form of securities had increased by 21.54% to Rp 562.35 trillion.

This increase is higher than the previous month’s. At the end of September 2016, the securities grew 9.5% on an annual basis. Bank Central Asia (BCA) recorded the highest increase in the securities by 127.25% to Rp 128.61 trillion.

Finance Director of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) Haru Koesmahargyo said that BRI enhanced the securities in order to secure the liquidity next year. "If the liquidity returns to normal, the growth of securities will be equal to the growth of credit," said Haru, Monday (5/12).

As of October 2016, the placement of funds in BRI securities has increased by 4.67% to Rp 122 trillion. Although growing, the increase in securities was lower than credit growth of BRI that was above 10% on an annual basis.

The slow credit

Director Wholesale Bank Permata PT Bank Permata Tbk Anita Siswadi said that the bank deposits funds in securities as an alternative when credit growth is still slow.

Meanwhile, Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN) explained, the high placement of funds in securities was driven by the excessive liquidity, which has not been used to channel the credits.

Director of Finance and Treasury of BTN Soeko Iman Nugroho said that the bank prefers to collect mid-term and long-term instruments. As of October 2016, the placement of BTN in securities increased by 49.14% to Rp 15.6 trillion.
