KPK arrests Banjarmasin officials on bribery

KOMISI PEMBERANTASAN KORUPSI - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) apprehended on Thursday evening five individuals in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, on bribery allegations focused around the deliberation of a bylaw.

Among the five persons are officials from the Banjarmasin Legislative Council (DPRD) and individuals from a company owned by the local administration and a private company.

"[We] suspect that there has been a transaction related to the bylaw-making process," KPK chairman Agus Rahardjo said in a statement on Friday.

KPK investigators are currently questioning the five individuals, who are being detained at the South Kalimantan Police headquarters in Banjarmasin.

"They will soon be taken to KPK headquarters in Jakarta to undergo a further investigation," said Agus, who revealed that some money was also confiscated in the operation.

Following the arrests, the KPK has roughly 24 hours to decide whether or not to name them suspects.

The arrests on Thursday follow a series of KPK operations in a number of areas across the country over the past few weeks, including the arrest on Orang Kaya Arya Zulkarnaen, the Batubara regent in North Sumatra, on Wednesday, and the arrest of Tegal Mayor Siti Mashita Soeparno in Central Java on Aug. 29.

The KPK plans to hold a press conference this afternoon to elaborate on the details of the case.
