JKW sees maritime resources as Indonesian future

JAKARTA. President Jokowi “Jokowi” Widodo has said Indonesia has to seriously start exploiting maritime resources, which he believes are the future of the country’s economy.

He said there is only a small part of maritime resources worth Rp 17 quadrillion (US$1.28 trillion) annually that could be exploited.

“Maritime resources are key to improve people’s welfare and social justice in the country,” said Jokowi in his speech at a peak event of the maritime cultural festival in Pegagan Beach, Tatah Bumbu regency, South Kalimantan, on Sunday.

During the event, South Kalimantan Governor Sahbirin Noor and Tanah Bumbu Regent Mardani Mamin demanded that the central government develop an international seaport in the area to boost the shipping industry in the province.

In response, Jokowi said his administration needed to study the potential of the areas before deciding whether or not such a large scale seaport was needed.

“I will make a note of it, meaning that we have to make a calculation on if such a project is good for the nation. If it is really good, I think we should develop it,” said Jokowi, as reported by tempo.co.
