Premium becomes less attractive during Idul Fitri

JAKARTA. Premium gasoline has become less attractive due to people’s growing appetite for higher quality fuels.

The sales of Premium, which has a research octane number (RON) on 88, fell by 4.83 percent to an average of 35,373 kiloliters per day during Idul Fitri holidays compared to sales on regular days, according to state-owned energy giant Pertamina.

The holidays refers to the period of two weeks before and one week after Idul Fitri, which fell on June 25.

Meanwhile, the sales of the RON-90 Pertalite grew by 25.7 percent to an average of 44,625 kiloliters per day compared to sales on regular days, while the RON-92 Pertamax increased by 24.64 percent to 18,352 kiloliters per day.

“People have started to become aware of the importance of using higher quality of fuels,” Pertamina’s senior vice president for fuel marketing and distribution Gigih Wahyu Hari Irianto said in Jakarta on Monday.

Gigih said the biggest fuel consumption came from Central Java where severe traffic congestion occurred on many roads during the homecoming exodus from western parts of Java – Jakarta, Banten and West Java – to Central Java.

Moreover, high fuel consumption was also recorded in West Sumatra and Lampung, considering countless settlers in Java originate from those regions. (Viriya P. Singgih)
