Online transportation challenge courier services

JAKARTA. The online-based transportation, has become challenges for courier services. Recently, the online-based transportation providers, such as Gojek and Grab not only provide passengers transportation service, but also delivery service.

President Director of PT Jalur Nugraha Ekakurir (JNE) Muhammad Feriadi said that the online transportation overlapped the premium services provided by JNE. “We provide economy and premium services. The online transportation also offer sort of premium service”, he said.

Fortunately, this does not bring serious impacts to JNE’s business, since online transportation mainly targets major urban area, while JNE business has penetrated to various regions in Indonesia. To date, JNE networks have reached 5,000 regions in Indonesia.

Despite of the low impacts, JNE plans to adjust the tariffs in order to compete with online transportation. JNE also develops a worth of IDR50 billion of My JNE application to allow customers to trace the status of their deliveries.

JNE has to develop innovation in order to compete with online-based transportation. Let alone, the business of online-based transportation have threatened the premium service or express delivery provided by the courier service. The premium service started operating in 2014, and to date the premium service has served around 15 million deliveries per month.

Aside of JNE, PT Pos Indonesia has to compete with the online transportation. “The impact will not be that serious, if we are able to provide much better services to customers”, President Director of PT Pos Indonesia Gilarsi Wahyu Setijono told KONTAN on Monday (24/10).

Gilarsih said that some of Pos Indonesia’s consumers at the segments of corporate and individual have shifted to online transportation for a delivery under the classification of ‘urgent’.
