JAKARTA. State-owned train operator PT. Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) plans to demolish dozens of illegal buildings around the Lenteng Agung train station in South Jakarta, claiming they block the view of the station.

“The station cannot be seen from the outside because it is blocked by nearby illegal buildings. We want to be able to see the station from the street again,” KAI Regional Office I spokesperson Bambang Prayitno said Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.

Most illegal buildings around the station are used for small businesses and some for residences.

Bambang said the decision to demolish the building was also supported by South Jakarta Mayor Syamsudin Noor. Lenteng Agung is a station located along the Jakarta-Depok-Bogor route.

Previously KAI’s VP head of corporate communication, Agus Komarudin, said that clearing the area near the station would not only be conducted for the sake of aesthetic, but for improving maintenance.

“Everything will be cleared [around the railway]. Normally, areas within 12 meters from the railway must be empty, but the range can be wider,” Agus said.
