Jokowi to decide reclamation project’s fate

JAKARTA. Head of Jakarta Development Planning Board Tuty Kusumawati said on Monday that Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung had requested the Jakarta administration to hand over materials related to the reclamation project in Jakarta Bay to be discussed in a Cabinet meeting.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will chair a limited Cabinet meeting to decide the fate of the project, particularly whether the government will allow the project to continue, said Tuty at City Hall.

“We still don’t know when the government will hold the limited Cabinet meeting to decide the fate of the reclamation project. In late July we submitted the materials related to the reclamation project,” Tuty said.

Then coordinating maritime affairs minister Rizal Ramli, who led a team of officials from the Environment and Forestry Ministry, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry and the Jakarta administration, decided to stop the development of Islet G, one of the Islets being developed in Jakarta Bay. On July 27, Rizal was replaced by Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, which is being seen as opening the possibility for the decision to be revised.

Previously, Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama criticized Rizal’s decision, saying it was unfair. Ahok said the continuation of the project was in Jokowi’s hands, as the project was regulated under the Presidential Decree of 1995. (Callistasia Anggun Wijaya)
