Jokowi opens Indonesian craft expo

JAKARTA. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo opened on Thursday the annual International Handicraft Trade Fair, or Inacraft, at the Jakarta Convention Center JCC. The handicraft exhibit will run through April 30 and involve 1,392 participants.

Jokowi expressed his appreciation for the progress Indonesia’s handicraft and creative industries have made, and hoped relevant businesses will continue to contribute significantly to the Indonesian economy.

“The craft and creative industry has grown rapidly in Indonesia. I am convinced that the future of Indonesia will be in the handicraft and creative industry,” the President said at JCC on Wednesday as reported by tempo.co.

Other aspects of the creative industry that can be further developed include music, movies, digital programming and fashion, he added.

Inacraft takes inspiration from Yogyakarta this year with the theme “From Smart Villages to the Global Market.”

Despite the 12 percent decline in the global craft industry to US$46.8 billion, Indonesia must still expand its position in the market, said Trade Ministry Enggartiasto Lukita.

Indonesia’s market share in the international craft market currently stands at 1.41 percent.

“[Indonesia’s] low market share has become a primary focus,” he said,

Steps the ministry will take to boost the nation’s position included cooperating with Indonesian embassies in various countries, as well as taking part in various trade expos, he added.
