Emergency services prepared for Lebaran travelers

JAKARTA. National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian has said the authorities will provide emergency services for Idul Fitri travelers at the Brebes-Gringsing toll road section in Central Java.

He said he had instructed the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) to prepare a helicopter to evacuate travelers during an emergency.

“There will also be a mobile health post that can pick up travelers who need immediate medical assistance,” Tito said on Wednesday.

He said the authorities were anticipating major traffic congestion in the area, especially near the East Brebes toll gate – colloquially known as Brexit.

During last year’s exodus, prolonged gridlock occurred in the area, reportedly resulting in a number of fatalities given the absence of rest areas along the toll road.

Tito added that officials would ensure the supply line for fuel to be uninterrupted during the travel season. They would also sell small packages of fuel.

“Meanwhile, several car providers will also provide mobile mechanics who will assist any car that breaks down along the toll road,” Tito said.

Toll road officials will distribute travel guides containing the location of rest areas, bathrooms and gas stations, as well as an emergency number and information on fuel and health services.

Tito said the number of travelers would peak on June 23, three days before Idul Fitri was expected to fall. (Suherdjoko)
