Depok to check people for ID cards

DEPOK. The Depok administration plans to check people arriving in the city for Depok identity cards in a bid to avoid unskilled workers settling in the city after the Idul Fitri holiday.

Identity card checks will be conducted in several places, Depok Deputy Mayor Pradi Supriyatna said, adding that those who did not have jobs would be immediately sent back to their hometowns.

“[Checks] will be done not only at the bus terminal but also at other places, such as shelters for migrant workers and maids,” Pradi said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

The number of newcomers in Depok reached 3.4 percent of the city's 1.8 million population in 2016, according to city administration data.

Depok's location, which is on the outskirts of the capital city, make it attractive for newcomers to flock to the city, Pradi said.

He stressed that the administration would not reject anyone who wanted to settle in Depok, but skilled people were preferable.

“We need residents that have skills because unskilled people might cause trouble,” he added.

After Idul Fitri, big cities like Jakarta and its satellite cities become magnets for people coming from the regions in the hope of securing unskilled work.
