City council lauds Jakarta development

JAKARTA ADMINISTRATION - The Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) has lauded the city’s infrastructure and human resources development during its five-year leadership under three different governors.

Outgoing governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat, who will officially leave office on Oct. 15, replaced Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama after the latter was controversially convicted of blasphemy. Ahok held the position after his superior and then-governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo won the presidential election in 2014

“The three leaders have developed Jakarta’s infrastructure that we can all enjoy,” said councillor Meity Magdalena Ussu, of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, during a plenary meeting on Monday, which was attended by Djarot, city administration officials and other councillors.

Meity cited data showing the Human Development Index in the city had improved under the three governors’ leadership. In 2013, the index stood at 78.08 percent and jumped to 79.60 last year. The index is far higher than the national index, which stood at 69.24 last year.

Meity said the figures showed that the administration had succeeded in providing residents with access to health, education and employment.

Unemployment decreased from 9.87 percent in 2012 to 6.12 percent last year, she added.

The council also noted some of the administration’s achievement, including an increase in the number of tourists visiting the city, infrastructure development to tackle flooding and traffic congestion, as well as opening up public spaces.
